Basic pay is not take-home pay. Allowances add to it; taxes and deductions take from it.
Each system is shown in its own currency. Converting would say nothing about what the money buys.
Compare within a system, not across them. Stages, hours and costs of living differ too much.

Place: India. Figures as advertised by AIIMS Raipur, a central government institute; the same pay levels apply under the 7th Central Pay Commission matrix, but each institution’s current notice is the authority.
Method: Figures copied from each recruitment advertisement as published. Not a survey of what residents receive in hand.
Includes: Basic pay at the entry cell of the stated 7th CPC pay level.
Does not include: Dearness allowance, non-practising allowance, house rent and other allowances, which the notices say are paid in addition. Taxes and deductions.

Method: Unweighted averages: each institution counts equally regardless of size. Survey of 114,361 residents and fellows. Figures as reported by the American Medical Association.
Includes: Stipend by program year.
Does not include: Benefits, additional pay for chief residents, taxes.

What is not here, and why

State government stipends in India: They differ by state and change often. We will add a state only from its own current government order.
Private hospitals and practice: There is no reliable public dataset. Anecdotes and job-site averages are not evidence.
United Kingdom: The official pay table we checked did not state the year it applies to, so it does not meet our standard yet.
Currency conversion: Converting rupees to dollars says nothing about what pay buys in each place. We show each system in its own currency.

How we choose what to publish

A pay figure appears here only if an official or authoritative published source states it, for a stated place and date, and we have read it in that source. We record exactly what the figure includes and excludes, and the date we last checked it.

We do not average across sources, fill gaps with estimates, project figures forward for inflation, or convert currencies. The only calculation on this page is the percentage change within each table, which we label as ours.

Pay is revised regularly. If you are deciding between real offers, the current notice or contract in front of you is the authority, not this page.
